Fire Support played a critical role in the battle for the Salerno beachhead. The Allies used it to devastating effect when the Germans brought the best part of their counterattack against the beaches. The naval gunfire in particular was so effective that the Germans could hardly move or concentrate during daylight hours without being hammered.
Missions are DS (Direct Support), GS (General Support), and R (Reinforcing). Each has its own benefits and pitfalls. Even ships get mission markers. And then there is smoke...!
